Introduction
With an increase in screen time during the pandemic, myopia is becoming an growing problem, especially among the younger population. Furthermore, the increase in financial stress and health precautions makes it even harder for people to afford and get professional diagnoses. I created Digital Optometrist in an attempt to address this issue. Digital Optometrist is a myopia evaluation web application that does not require any special instruments to function other than what is on most laptop computers: a webcam, keyboard, and screen.
Procedure
Digital Optometrist works by first calibrating the user's screen to find the pixel size of the computer. This step is necessary to give the user a consistently-sized testing letter, the ones found on the vision charts at the optometrist. The program then take the user's distance from the screen with the webcam, and then conducts the vision check. Lastly, it converts the visual acuity gained from the vision check into an estimated prescription-like value.
Test it out!
To test out the program made from the research, go to Digital Optometrist. You are welcome to try out the application.
